Trace. Particle. Wave

(currently on show @Alert Studio, Bucharest)
2017

Scrutinized under intense light, seemingly commonplace scenes attain a surreal quality. Strength of light translates into fluidity of matter, dissolution of contours and reduction of forms to their visual essence. All these, in turn, end up rendering visual reality unexpectedly uncanny and phantasmal. In the peak of summer, somewhere like on a busy beach, on the banks of a river or in a flowery garden, colours become intensely saturated, silhouettes get lyrically blurred and simple actions gain an almost mythical quality.

Genesis

2015

Most works in this series started off as formal experiments, but, as the works attained more precise visual and conceptual features, they became increasingly symbolic of a state of beginning, of creation, of initial appearance of something out of an apparent nothingness. Others also function as sort of paradoxical mind maps: although they strongly relate to my personal life experience, their semantic content is open enough for each viewer to link them to his or her various mental and spiritual itineraries. All of them, however, are works about a certain intuitive knowledge and even spiritual understanding of reality, of its intimate and not rationally obvious mechanisms, for the discovery of which introspection and dynamic drawing are my favourite tools.

The glory of days

2013-2015
Each of these drawings represents my subjective conclusion of a day or my view of the important event of the day. We leave alert lives, with days hastily passing by, often leaving us with no meaning, with nothing to hang on to but our banal survival. Under these circumstances, these works attempt to put some order in this swirling carousel, to sketch the bigger picture, by noting down the significant images, phrases, feelings or thoughts.

Passages

2013-2014
These works are the result of an obstinate study of humble objects, which I however find to be charged specific poetic potential. They are moreover attempts to imprecisely picture the fascinating relationship between viewing an object and a immersing into a feeling, in a particular, frozen moment in time.

Geometries

2014 – 2015

The works in this series are rooted in a personal fascination with the underlying order beneath the apparent chaos
and randomness of the world and of our lives. They are also formal experiments, which attempt to reach a kind of
aesthetic quality, to provide a certain experience of beauty, for which geometry is a means, although its constraints are never fully assumed. Thus, a particular tension is being produced by the contrast between the sensuousness of the pigment (rather subtle, in the case of the greyish pastels and more spectacular, in the case of oil paint) and the rigorousness of the rectangular or the circular shape.
